Summary

This thesis describes the experience of homosexuality in Amsterdam between 1890 and 1940. With a microhistorical approach, new light is shed on how the modern city influenced the everyday experience of sexuality for men who had sex with other men. Class, masculinity, space and modernity are the categories that constructed this experience.

The approach used and the introduction of new source material redefines and supplements silences and ambiguities surrounding the history of homosexuality in Amsterdam. In addition, this thesis demonstrates the importance of a spatial analysis in the modern history of sexuality in general.
