Yesterday, a new gay bar opened along the Amstel under the name Free Willie. The place is aimed at visitors who like to be naked and is located in the building that previously housed the clubs YOLO and Roque.

After an opening party for invited guests last Wednesday, Free Willie has been open to the public since yesterday. Although located in a former club, the new place is not focused on dancing, but on meeting each other, having a chat or playing a game of pool at the pool table.

The new bar is an initiative of Richard Keldoulis and his team, who founded the popular fetish club Church in 2008 and in 2013 opened gay sauna Nieuwezijds. Since 2017 they also organize the StreetHeart Festival in Kerkstraat.

Free Willie focuses mainly on gay men. In addition, non-binary people and trans men and trans women are also welcome, since there are so few places for them - says Keldoulis, who is better known as drag queen Jennifer Hopelezz.




Amstel 178 is a historic location for gay nightlife: as early as 1976, Ad van Besouw and Manfred Langer opened a small disco here under the name Amstel Taveerne Club. This was followed by The Club, the Willems Club, the You II and Club Roque.

From 2017 to 2022 this location was a gay club again under the name YOLO, which was succeeded by the Jungle Club, which aimed at straight tourists. With Free Willie, Amstel 178 has become a gay location again for the time being.

A nice detail is that a little further on, at Amstel 102, from 1990 to 1991 there was a gay bar called Big Willy's. It is not known whether there was an opportunity to be naked there.


The new naked bar Free Willie is open every day of the week, except Tuesdays. The entrance fee is 8 euros and the opening hours are from 20.00 to 4.00 hrs and until 5.00 hrs on Fridays and Saturdays.
